Osun: Reasons for the removal of Police Commissioner Olaleye – HURIWA.
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has urged the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to explain to Nigerians why he removed Osun State Commissioner of Police, Faleye Olaleye.
According to the group, there is a movement to destroy the peace that the people of the state have enjoyed for many years and to introduce what has become the norm in states such as Imo and Enugu, where unknown gunmen are now issuing orders to citizens.
HURIWA, in a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, warned of an impending breakdown of law and order in Osun State.
Track News can authoritatively report that the state has become a theatre of war since the change of government, with thugs freely carrying guns, cutlasses, and other dangerous weapons, chasing innocent citizens around.
On December 5, 2022, thugs went around the state, particularly the motor parks, shooting sporadically, maiming many for life and killing a few.
And CP Olaleye, who acted quickly and prevented the situation from worsening, is now being removed and relocated for allegedly refusing to do the bidding of some top government officials.
The person, CP Patrick Longe, who would be announced soon as Olaleye’s replacement, was said to have been recommended by another CP from Ede, the new Governor’s country home.
“We also hear that CP Longe has pledged allegiance to some State power brokers,” HURIWA said.
“To demonstrate that even the IGP, Usman Baba, is unhappy with the posting, he sent out a signal posting the new CP, but stated that it is subject to approval by the Police Service Commission.”
“It is extremely unusual for an IGP to subject the posting of police officers to the approval of the Police Service Commission.” The Police Service Commission has authority only over promotion and disciplinary matters; posting is at the discretion of the IGP.
“To that end, we urge the IGP to reconsider his decision to send CP Longe to Osun State in order to avoid a breakdown in law and order, as all indications indicate that he is being sent there for a hatchet mission.”
According to the rights group, the state must be handled by a neutral and highly professional CP who is unwilling to compromise and is committed to maintaining law and order regardless of who is gored.
“They should also inform Nigerians of CP Faleye’s offense that warranted his removal after only two months as Commissioner of Police in Osun State, despite the overwhelming praise from the good people of Osun for his professionalism,” the group demanded.
