The Middle Belt Forum, MBF, has stated that the All Progressives Congress, APC’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket is a threat to the country’s collective well-being and unity, and that it is an evil plot that Nigerians will defeat in 2023, Track News reports.

Dr. Bitrus Pogu, the National President of MBF, made the statement in Makurdi in response to the selection of Alhaji Ibrahim Shettima as the running mate of Senator Bola Tinubu, the APC presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election.

Dr. Pogu stated that the choice reflected the APC’s ignorance and insensitivity to the mood and pains of Nigerians at this time.

“It is an unfortunate development,” he says, “unfortunate in the sense that we are living in a terrible period in which the country is being tormented by insurgents from all over the place, beginning with Boko Haram in Borno, and Shettima is from there.”

“And if such a development occurs now without regard for the diversity of this country in terms of region, religion, and other issues, I believe it is an unfortunate development.”

“It is an unfortunate development that the APC presidential candidate has succumbed to such pressure.” One wishes they would consider what would be beneficial to Nigeria at this time.

“Nigerians have not recovered from the insurgency, which is primarily of Islamic origin, demonstrating that the APC is insensitive to Nigeria’s and Nigerians’ plight.” And it is not prepared to bring healing, reconciliation, or rescue Nigeria from its current problems.

“It is also an unfortunate development because this is not the MKO Abiola era, which was several years ago.” Religion should be handled with caution in these times.

“We believe that Nigerians, both Muslims and Christians, will rise up and defeat this evil, because if it succeeds, I doubt that Nigeria will be able to recover.”

“There are so many suspicious things going on,” he says, “that point accusing fingers to this government of being complicit or, at the very least, lenient towards the insurgency, which is predominantly of Islamic origin.” And I think it’s unfortunate that the same political party is now pushing a Muslim-Muslim ticket. But I believe Nigerians will defeat it and pull ourselves out of it.

“The ticket endangers the country’s collective well-being and unity.” At a time when we have insurgents of various types, Boko Haram, herdsmen militia, ISWAP, and others of Islamic faith all from the North, saying you are foisting a Muslim-Muslim ticket on Nigeria is the most unpatriotic presentation at this time.

“It implies that the APC lacks a sense of plurality and unity in Nigeria.” Of course, if you look at the appointments made by the current government, you will notice nepotism and religious bias. And it would be unfortunate if the APC went even further in this direction.

“Some argue that it doesn’t matter. That is not correct; it does matter at this time. And anyone who says it doesn’t matter is an enemy of the country; he doesn’t love Nigeria and wants it to fail.”
