The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old student, Chidozie Humble, for unlawful possession of firearms. Humble, a 300-level student from the Department of Animal Breeding and Physiology at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), was taken into custody after police discovered multiple weapons in his residence.

According to a statement released by DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, detectives from the Serious Crime Investigation Squad (SCISSORS) carried out the arrest based on credible intelligence. The operation took place on March 5, 2025, at approximately 10:50 a.m.

During the raid, officers recovered three locally made pistols and one English CZECH SCORPION pistol from Humble’s room at the Royal Heritage Lodge in Umudike, located in Ikwuano Local Government Area. The police believe the suspect may have connections to a larger network involved in the illegal possession or distribution of firearms.

The authorities have emphasized their commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety of residents in Abia State. Investigations are ongoing, and the police are currently interrogating Humble to determine the source of the firearms and identify any possible accomplices.

The arrest highlights the increasing efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons in the region. Possession of firearms without a license is a serious offense under Nigerian law, carrying severe penalties upon conviction. The police have urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities that may help in the fight against crime.

While no additional arrests have been made in connection with the case, authorities have assured the public that further investigations will be conducted to uncover any criminal networks linked to the suspect. The police command has also reiterated its dedication to maintaining law and order across the state.

This development has raised concerns among students and residents of Umudike, as many question how such weapons were acquired and stored within a student lodge. Some students have expressed fears over security in the area, calling for increased vigilance and stricter monitoring of hostels and off-campus accommodations.

Meanwhile, university authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the arrest. However, sources within the institution suggest that disciplinary actions may be considered depending on the outcome of the police investigation. The incident has also sparked discussions about student involvement in criminal activities and the need for greater security awareness on campus.

As investigations continue, the Abia State Police Command has assured the public that it will provide updates on the case. Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in their efforts to dismantle any criminal networks operating in the state.
