To protect the facility from attack, security has been beefed up around the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Kwara.

The deployment was in response to INEC’s request that police protect its offices across the country in light of recent attacks and destruction of election materials in some states.

Alhaji Attahiru Madami, the Kwara Resident Electoral Commissioner, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ilorin that it was critical to prevent any attempt to undermine security around INEC offices.

He expressed confidence that the police would fulfill their mandate of providing a safe and enabling environment for the general elections in 2023.

Madami has thus warned miscreants and political thugs to stay away from INEC facilities.

He also stated that the commission collaborated with the state Fire Service to train its personnel on firefighting methods and precautions.

The REC also stated that the bushes surrounding the office have been cleared in order to avoid bush burning, which could lead to fire outbreaks.

Madami urged the public to check their names on the INEC portal to ensure they were written correctly.

Persons caught with double registration, he says, will be fined N1 million or imprisoned if prosecuted.

“Our Biometric Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) device is one man, one vote, and anyone caught registering twice will face jail time or a N1 million fine.”

“Before the election, members of the National Youth Service Corps will be trained on how to use the BVAS,” Madami said.

He claimed that the use of BVAS had put an end to election rigging.
