“Political Unrest in Rivers: MOREPEND Calls for Mediation and Reconciliation”

The Movement for Reconciliation and Peace in the Niger Delta (MOREPEND) has voiced deep concern over the escalating political crisis in Rivers State. The organization, which is committed to fostering peace and stability in the Niger Delta region, has called for dialogue and non-violence among all parties involved.

In a statement, MOREPEND warned that the ongoing tensions threaten not only the security of Rivers State but also the collective progress of its people. The group emphasized that political disagreements should not be allowed to spiral into chaos, noting that history has shown how violence only leads to destruction and suffering.

The organization urged political leaders, stakeholders, and their supporters to exercise restraint and prioritize the well-being of the citizens they serve. MOREPEND also called on security agencies to handle the situation with professionalism and impartiality, ensuring that lives and property are protected during this period of unrest.

In addition to addressing political actors, MOREPEND appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organizations to take active roles in promoting peace and reconciliation. The group stressed that the Niger Delta has faced enough challenges in the past, and now is the time for unity rather than further division.

“The Niger Delta has faced enough challenges over the years. Now, more than ever, we must come together to uphold peace and stability,” the statement read. MOREPEND expressed confidence that with constructive engagement and mutual respect, Rivers State could overcome the crisis and emerge stronger.

Reaffirming its commitment to peacebuilding, MOREPEND stated its willingness to support any initiative that fosters unity and reconciliation in the region. The organization urged all parties to choose peace over conflict, dialogue over violence, and progress over division, emphasizing that only through peaceful means can the state move forward.
