The Sultan of Sokoto Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar has assured the 2023 polls will not break Nigeria, declaring only God can decide the fate of the country.

The Sultan, who is the Co-Chairman of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), said this in Abuja during the NIREC 4th Quarter 2022 meeting.

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, and also the Co-Chairman of NIREC, Archbishop Daniel Okoh said questions and doubts are being expressed about Nigeria’s capacity and political will to conduct free, fair, credible and peaceful elections.

Sultan said a lot of people make comments about 2023 as a make-or-break election for Nigeria adding that: “I don’t believe in that, I refuse to believe in that. It is just an election that people will go out, cast their vote in peace and whoever emerges the leader will be the leader of this country.

“So, I don’t believe it is a make or break election, and we must not play into the hands of those elements of Nigeria who keep on parading those issues as this is the election that will decide the fate of this nation, only Allah decides the fate of this country”.

He charged politicians and electorates to campaign peacefully and elect the leader they think is best for Nigeria and the rest would be left to Almighty Allah.

“Let us have the fear of Allah in whatever we do and have this Nigerian project at heart so that we counsel our followers, we the traditional and religious leaders will counsel our followers so that we do what we believe is best for all of us as one big family with different background.”
