Anambra Conducts First LG Elections In 11 Years
Amid controversy, the Anambra State electorate will on Saturday, September 28, head to the polls to elect their Local Government executives for the first time since 2013.
The last election, held during former Governor Peter Obi’s administration, has left the state without elected local officials for over a decade.
Successive administrations, including the tenure of Governor Willie Obiano, relied on caretaker committees to manage local councils.
However, the sitting Governor, Charles Soludo, who initially continued the practice, recently announced the election following a Supreme Court ruling that outlawed the appointment of unelected local government officials.
Meanwhile, the election has sparked controversy, with opposition parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), accusing the state electoral body of favouritism and poor planning.
Despite these concerns, Soludo’s All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is confident of a sweeping victory across the 21 Local Government Areas of the State.
