The All Progressive Congress has zoned the Senate Presidency to the South-South after the role the region played in the last Presidential election.

The President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is also reportedly keen on having a Christian in person of Senator Godswill Akpabio as Senate President. However, the Governor of Ondo State and the leader of the Southern Governor Forum, Rotimi Akeredolu has termed the zoning arrangement as the plan of certain individuals to hijack the incoming administration.

A Former Member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Bernard Mikko has stated that the President-elect has to be conscious of the Governor’s disagreement with the selection of Senator Godswill Akpabio.

He alluded to the fact that there will an election in 2027 in which Bola Tinubu will still need the support of these governors. He opined that the President-elect should look at all the issues critically before his inauguration.

He said, ”If you have listened to many stakeholders in the party beyond the National Working committee that made this pronouncement.

The leader of the Southern Governors, Rotimi Akeredolu spoke against Akpabio’s nomination. I think if the Southern governors are against Akpabio’s nomination then Tinubu has to be careful because there is a 2027 election.

The governor forum is a major organ within the party. For me, the President-elect has to wait to be sworn in and see a reason why he needs further consultation. There is a trust deficit within the hierarchy of the party, the National Secretary of the party even went to challenge the leadership of the party in all this. There is ample time for the President-elect to look at all the issues and arrive at the best way forward.”
