Lagos guber election: Sanwo-Olu warns traditionalists over Oro festival
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has warned traditionalists ahead of this Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.
This follows the scheduling of the Oro festival in at least five local governments in the state.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, Sanwo-Olu urged the traditional institution to respect the rights of citizens.
“Whilst the state government reiterates the freedom of religion, it also cautions traditional institutions holding these customary rites to ensure the activities do not infringe on the fundamental rights of citizens, who are not of this faith, especially during the elections,” the statement reads in part.
It added that “anybody planning to foment trouble will have the law to contend with.”
The Oro rites are to be held from 12 am to 5:30 am on Saturday, March 18.
