GOVERNOR Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State urged the Federal Government and members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday to find ways to resolve the crisis that has led to ASUU’s ongoing strike in the interest of Nigerian students and the nation in general.

Abiodun, who made the remarks at the inauguration of the Governing-Councils of the state-owned tertiary institutions on June 12 at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Kuto, Abeokuta, decried the prolonged strike, which he said had done more harm to the nation’s education sector.

“Let me add my voice to the call for a quick resolution to the lingering crisis between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU,” the governor said. We can all see the consequences of the unresolved crisis in our education system, as well as in other sectors of our economy. These students are not in school, and as we all know, an idle mind is a ready workshop for the devil.

“This is no longer about who is right or wrong; it is about what is best for our country’s youth.” As a result, I appeal to both sides to reach an agreement and resolve this crisis for the sake of our youth and our nation as a whole.”

He, on the other hand, urged the newly inaugurated council members of Ogun State’s tertiary institutions to collaborate with the management of their respective institutions.

In his response, Professor Toyin Ashiru, Chairman of the Governing Council of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, praised Governor Abiodun for giving them the opportunity to serve the state, promising that the governing boards of all state-owned schools would reinvigorate internally generated revenue to relieve the state government’s financial burden.
