Rivers Power Play: Gov. Fubara Reschedules Budget Presentation Amidst Tensions with Pro-Wike Lawmakers

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has once again written to the State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, requesting to re-present the 2025 budget. This follows a Supreme Court ruling that addressed the legislative standoff in the state.
In a letter dated March 13, 2025, Fubara formally communicated his request to Amaewhule and suggested March 19 as the new date for the budget presentation. However, he also indicated that lawmakers could select another date if necessary.
Fubara had previously attempted to re-present the budget but was blocked from accessing the Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt. The standoff between the executive and legislative arms has been a source of political tension in the state.
The governor emphasized that the Supreme Court’s directive underscores the need for all branches of government to function within constitutional limits. He stressed that resolving the impasse is crucial for the stability and development of Rivers State.
“No matter our differences, the interests of the state and its people must come first,” Fubara stated in his letter to the Assembly. He reiterated his commitment to presenting the 2025 budget on March 19 at 11:00 a.m. but remained open to any other date that lawmakers find suitable within the month.
The budget dispute has been a major issue in Rivers State politics, highlighting ongoing tensions between Fubara and the Assembly. The Supreme Court’s involvement has brought renewed attention to the constitutional responsibilities of both the executive and legislative branches in the state.
Observers are watching closely to see how the Assembly will respond to Fubara’s latest request and whether the Supreme Court ruling will help break the deadlock. The resolution of this issue will be critical for the smooth governance of Rivers State as the government prepares for the 2025 fiscal year.
