“Rivers SSG Warns: Fubara’s Simplicity Is Not a Sign of Weakness”
The Secretary to the Government of Rivers State (SSG), Dr. Tammy Danagogo, has cautioned that Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s calm and peaceful approach to governance should not be mistaken for weakness. His remarks come amid growing criticism from political opponents, particularly the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Opponents have specifically questioned Danagogo’s role in the administration, especially after he signed a letter inviting lawmakers for a meeting with the Governor. Wike dismissed the letter, calling it “useless,” sparking further political tension within the state.
Speaking to journalists during the commissioning of Okrika Grammar School in Okrika, Danagogo defended his actions, stating that there was nothing inappropriate about the SSG facilitating a letter for an informal meeting. He clarified that such communication falls within his official responsibilities and does not constitute an overreach of his position. He pointed out that during Wike’s tenure as Governor, he performed similar duties as the SSG and that such a practice is not unusual in governance.
Danagogo, a lawyer from the Kalabari region, stressed that his response was not politically motivated but aimed at correcting misrepresentations. He argued that his role in the administration is in line with standard government procedures and should not be misinterpreted as an undue influence over state affairs.
He further praised Governor Fubara’s restraint in handling political challenges, particularly the recent situation where the state assembly complex was locked, preventing the Governor from presenting the budget. Danagogo noted that in similar circumstances, past governors might have responded more aggressively, but Fubara has chosen to maintain peace and order.
The SSG emphasized that the Governor’s decision to de-escalate political tensions is a deliberate choice aimed at ensuring stability in Rivers State. He highlighted that some leaders, when faced with such provocations, might resort to drastic measures that could negatively impact governance and the economy. However, Fubara remains committed to a peaceful and people-focused administration.
Danagogo also assured the people of Rivers State that the government remains dedicated to their welfare and economic stability. He stated that Fubara’s leadership is centered on avoiding policies that could cause hardship for citizens, reinforcing the administration’s focus on governance rather than political battles.
The tension between Governor Fubara and Wike has been a focal point in Rivers State politics in recent months, with both sides engaging in verbal exchanges over governance decisions. Despite the political friction, Danagogo urged stakeholders to focus on the administration’s performance rather than engaging in unnecessary conflicts.
He reiterated that his role as SSG is to serve the interests of the state and facilitate smooth governance, rather than engage in political disputes. He called on critics to recognize the Governor’s commitment to maintaining order and ensuring that Rivers State remains stable despite ongoing political challenges.
The political climate in Rivers State remains tense, with divisions between supporters of Governor Fubara and those aligned with Wike. As the situation continues to unfold, observers are closely watching how the administration navigates these tensions while striving to maintain stability in governance.
