Sanusi II Reinstated as Kano Emir
Muhammadu Sanusi II has been reinstated as the Emir of Kano following the resolution of the Kano State House of Assembly to dethrone the current Emir and dismantle the four new Emirates in the State established under a controversial 2019 law.
In May 2019, the assembly approved the amendment of the Kano State Emirate Council Law, which led to the creation of five separate emirates: Kano, Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi, with emirs appointed to each emirate.
However, in March 2020, Sanusi was deposed as Emir of Kano by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, citing “total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the governor.”

During a recent plenary session, the Kano State House of Assembly passed a bill to amend the law, arguing that it was not conceived in good faith and expressing concerns about the creation of the emirates. The amended bill aims to abolish the five emirates and restore the previous Kano emirate system.
While the governor is yet to officially assent to the bill, credible inside sources have confirmed Sanusi’s reinstatement, with his expected return to Kano on Friday. The Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, who sponsored the Amendment Bill, revealed that the bill has been sent to the governor for assent, effectively reinstating Sanusi as the Kano Emir.
The passage of the bill means that there is no longer an active Emir in Kano in all the five Emirates, providing the governor with the authority to call on the traditional kingmakers to choose a new king.
