Security in Focus: Tinubu Convenes Urgent Talks with Service Chiefs in Aso Rock
President Bola Tinubu held a meeting with Nigeria’s service chiefs at Aso Rock on Tuesday, addressing key security concerns in the country. The closed-door meeting comes amid ongoing challenges related to insurgency, banditry, and other security threats affecting different regions.
The discussions reportedly focused on assessing the current security situation and reviewing ongoing military operations. Sources indicate that Tinubu urged the security heads to intensify efforts in tackling the nation’s security issues and ensuring stability across affected areas.
The service chiefs present at the meeting included the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, were also in attendance.
While details of the meeting have not been officially disclosed, sources suggest that discussions covered recent security operations against insurgents and criminal groups. The President reportedly emphasized the need for better coordination among the military and intelligence agencies to enhance national security.
This meeting follows previous engagements by the President with security officials, underscoring his administration’s commitment to addressing the country’s security challenges. Nigeria has been facing persistent security threats, including Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast, banditry in the Northwest, and separatist agitations in the Southeast.
In recent weeks, security agencies have intensified operations against criminal elements, leading to the arrest and neutralization of several suspected terrorists and armed groups. However, concerns remain about the increasing cases of kidnappings and attacks on rural communities.
President Tinubu has repeatedly assured Nigerians that his administration is committed to improving security and restoring peace across the country. He has urged security agencies to adopt new strategies and leverage technology in combating crime and terrorism.
The service chiefs are expected to provide further updates on their efforts in the coming weeks as the government continues its push to strengthen security nationwide.
