Senate Considers the Possibility of Re-inviting El-Rufai and Two Other Nominees for Ministerial List, Notes Adaramodu
Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu has indicated the potential reconsideration of inviting three ministerial nominees who are currently pending confirmation, for a subsequent round of screening.
Adaramodu shared this information during his appearance on the morning show.
The decision by the Upper House to not grant confirmation to certain candidates, including the ex-Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, Stella Okotete, the nominee from Delta State, and Abubakar Danladi, the nominee from Taraba State, was primarily motivated by security concerns.
This stance signifies that the Senate has taken a cautious approach, prioritizing security considerations as a key criterion for the confirmation of ministerial nominees. Consequently, the three aforementioned candidates are being weighed against these security considerations before their potential re-invitation for another round of screening.
During Adaramodu’s appearance on the breakfast programme, he acknowledged the sensitive nature of the confirmation process and the Senate’s duty to uphold the safety and stability of the nation. This cautious approach is reflective of the Senate’s commitment to thorough assessment and due diligence in its responsibilities of confirming ministerial nominees.
The deliberations surrounding the re-screening of the three candidates, El-Rufai, Okotete, and Danladi, illustrate the careful and meticulous nature of the Senate’s decision-making process. This level of scrutiny reflects the importance of maintaining the security and stability of the nation, even at the stage of ministerial confirmation.
As the process unfolds, the Senate’s stance on security concerns continues to be a pivotal factor in determining the fate of these nominees. The willingness to re-evaluate the initial decisions through re-screening demonstrates the Senate’s dedication to upholding its responsibilities with utmost consideration for the nation’s safety and wellbeing.
We asked whether the Senate would still confirm them, Adaramodu responded: “The question raised about them is an ongoing issue.
“So, once the Senate is satisfied, definitely, if we need to invite them to the chamber for the re-confirmation and re-screening, then we’ll do that.
“If security is not satisfied, the Senate cannot be satisfied. It depends on what security agencies and the person that nominates them say.”
On Monday, the Senate granted approval and confirmed 45 ministerial nominees appointed by President Bola Tinubu, following a voice vote.
Nonetheless, the legislators postponed the ministerial confirmation of El-Rufai and two other individuals, pending “security clearance“.
