Senate to investigate assassination attempt on Ekweremadu
The Nigerian Senate has mandated its Committee on Police Affairs to investigate the alleged assassination attempt on the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and members of his family.
In the early hours of Tuesday, Ekweremadu, his wife and son survived an assassination attempt at his Apo Quarters in the country’s capital, Abuja.
“I hope the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police will find out exactly what happened so that they can ensure that this kind of thing does not happen again,” the Senate President Bukola Saraki said during the Tuesday plenary.
“We will continue to do our best to see how we can address the security situation in this country and see what we can do to give the security agencies all our support.” he added
Ekweremadu who also confirmed the alleged assassination attempt at the senate floor cites Order 43 said he “called the IGP and other security agencies, their phones were switched off. The assailants left in a hurry and left some of their weapons. I fear for my life. This country is no longer safe,” Ekweremadu said
Saraki, while reacting to allegation by the deputy speaker, said that he hopes “the police are not being partisan in the way they treat cases.”
He, therefore, urged the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police to find out exactly what happened so that they can ensure that it doesn’t repeat itself.
