Senate To Name Committees And Chairmen On Monday, Plans To Add More
The Senate has disclosed plans to name Standing Committees and their chairmen on Monday.
TrackNews Media reports that the upper chamber on Saturday also said it would increase the number of standing committees, even though it didn’t say by how many.
After yesterday’s ministerial screening, the Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, at the plenary, raised a point of order on the need to amend the Standing Orders of the Senate.
The amendment, as learned, was to expand the number of Senate standing committees.
The Senate leader noted it was necessary to accommodate issues that would make the orders dynamic to facilitate an effective legislative process.
Bamidele said despite the amendment, several issues still require further modifications in response to emerging developments that would enhance rules or practice and procedures for legislative practice.
He noted that “The amendment will ensure that the expansion facilitates the definition of the functions and jurisdictions of new committees. As a result, the consequential approval of the Senate is mandatory for the review of the renumbered Order 96 to accommodate the new committees.”
The Senate leader prayed for the approval of the proposed amendments, and the Senate went into a Committee of the Whole to consider the modification.
