Senate urges federal government to name national monument after Shagari
The Nigerian Senate has called on the federal government to immortalize late president Shehu Shagari by naming a national monument in his name. The Senate made this call on Thursday, January 17, during plenary.
The Senate also observed a minute silence in honour of the late president and decided to: Send a high powered delegation of this hallowed Chamber to console with the family of the deceased as well as the people and Government of Sokoto State; and urge the federal government of Nigeria to immortalize Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari by naming a national monument after him.
Speaking on the death of the late president, Senator Adamu Aliero said: “He was a man who exhibited simplicity and humility even after being overthrown by the military. The late Shagari will be remembered for the role he played in the massive infrastructural development of the FCT.”-
“Nigerians from all works of life and parts of the country have attested to his character. Alh. Shehu Shagari personified humility, character, honesty and patriotism,” Senator Shehu Sani said.
On his part, Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan said: “What we should learn from the life and times of Late Shehu Shagari is that power is transient; we could be in today and out tomorrow, but what is permanent is the good we do while in power. I pray the Almighty grant him eternal rest.”
“The Late Alh. Shehu Shagari was indeed a national hero without boundaries. He lives forever in the hearts and minds of Nigerians regardless of where they come from and I believe this should be a lesson for all of us as leaders,” deputy Senate leader, Ike Ekweremadu added.
Meanwhile, Tracknews.ng had reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemned President Muhammadu Buhari’s absence at the burial of former President of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, on Saturday, December 29.
The party says President Buhari’s absence at the funeral, particularly regarding Alhaji Shehu Shagari’s status, as the first executive president of the country, is unpardonable and a very wrong precedence in Nigeria’s national protocol.
