Shehu Sani Calls El-Rufai’s Exit from APC a Positive Development

Former senator and activist Shehu Sani has reacted to the departure of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai from the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as beneficial to the party. Sani, who previously represented Kaduna Central in the Senate, referred to El-Rufai as a liability to the APC in Kaduna and suggested that his exit would help strengthen the party.
El-Rufai, once a prominent APC figure, has not officially announced his next political step, but reports confirm he has left the ruling party. His departure comes after months of speculation regarding his strained relationship with the APC leadership, particularly following the Senate’s decision to stall his ministerial nomination over security concerns.
El-Rufai served as Kaduna State governor from 2015 to 2023 and was a key ally of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He played a significant role in the APC’s rise to power but also faced criticism during his tenure. His administration was controversial, with opponents accusing him of implementing divisive policies, especially on religious and ethnic matters in Kaduna, a state historically known for tensions in these areas.
Shehu Sani, a long-time critic of El-Rufai, did not mince words in his reaction to the former governor’s exit. He argued that El-Rufai’s leadership style alienated many people and created internal discord within the APC. Sani himself was once an APC member before parting ways due to disagreements with the party’s leadership, including El-Rufai.
While El-Rufai has yet to publicly respond to Sani’s remarks, his departure from the APC marks a significant shift in Kaduna’s political landscape. It remains uncertain whether he will join another political party or step away from active politics for the time being. However, given his influence in both Kaduna and national politics, many are watching closely to see what his next move will be.
His exit also raises questions about the APC’s future in Kaduna. El-Rufai played a crucial role in securing electoral victories for the party in past elections. Now, political analysts suggest the APC may face internal challenges in maintaining its dominance in the state, particularly if El-Rufai decides to align with another political platform.
Speculation is already mounting about El-Rufai’s potential political plans for 2027, with some suggesting he may return to contest at either the state or national level. For now, his departure from the APC marks a pivotal moment in his political career, and observers will be watching closely for any signs of his next steps.
