Shehu Sani kicks as House of Reps processes bill to jail protesters
Shenu Sani, a former federal lawmaker, has lambasted members of the House of Assembly for considering a bill to jail protesters in Nigeria.
A bill was presented to the House of Representatives for consideration during the week and seeks to jail what they termed unlawful protesters in Nigeria.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Emeka Chinedu Martins (PDP-Imo), sought ‘An Act to amend the Criminal Code Act Cap 38, laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, to further preserve the sanctity of human life and property, and to provide specifically for mob action, prescribe punishment and other matters.
Shenu Sani, in his reaction, noted that the National Assembly, which is a democratic institution, is now being used to strangulate democracy.
“The House of Representative bill being processed to jail protesters for five years shows how a democratic institution can be used to strangulate democracy. They are not making laws, they are crafting tyranny,” he said.
“Law to censor the Social Media,Law to regulate NGOs and law to jail protesters; slowly, our democracy legislatively transitions to fascism.”
