Senegal Sacks AFCON Winning Coach, Cisse
According to the local football association, Aliou Cisse, who guided Senegal to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022 and the past two World Cup tournaments, will no longer lead the team as the government has decided not to renew his contract.
Cisse, a former national team captain and Paris Saint-Germain player became coach in 2015 and secured the country’s first AFCON title two years later.
Senegal reached the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup and the same stage in this year’s AFCON, where hosts and eventual champions Ivory Coast knocked them out.
The Senegalese FA announced that an interim coaching team will take over for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Malawi. The country is currently tied with Burkina Faso with four points from two games. In addition, they remain undefeated in the 2026 World Cup qualifying but trail group leaders Sudan by two points after four matches.
