The South South Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has taken significant steps following its recent meeting held in Benin, Edo State, resulting in the suspension of its Zonal Secretary, Chief Felix Omemu. The suspension, cited for alleged misconduct, was just one of the many resolutions adopted during the highly attended meeting, signifying a period of strategic planning and restructuring within the zone.

In the communique released after the gathering, signed by the Zonal Organizing Secretary, Arch. Ekom Akonjom, the committee unveiled several key decisions, reinforcing its commitment to strengthen party structures ahead of upcoming elections. Among these decisions was the establishment of a Zoning Committee, which has been entrusted to Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe. The purpose of this committee is to develop an equitable zoning formula for the allocation of party offices, thus ensuring balanced representation among the member states within the zone.

The approved zoning formula specifies that the Chairman will be from Edo State, while other pivotal roles such as Secretary and Treasurer have been allocated to Cross River State and Delta State, respectively. Additional positions, including Legal Adviser, Publicity Secretary, Woman Leader, and Youth Leader, have been distributed among Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States, ensuring a broad-based involvement across the zone’s political landscape.

Further plans were laid out for the Zonal Elective Congress, scheduled for February 22, 2025, in Calabar, Cross River State. This event is poised to be a turning point as it will see the election of new leaders who will spearhead the party’s operations in the zone for the next four years. Arrangements for this congress have been entrusted to the Zonal Working Committee, ensuring the event is organized efficiently and effectively.

In light of Chief Omemu’s suspension, George Turnah (MON) Esq has been appointed as the Acting Zonal Secretary. His swearing-in was overseen by Chief Dan Orbih, the National Vice Chairman of the Party for the South South Zone, with the oath administered by Rt. Hon. Prince Chibudom Nwuche, a notable PDP Board of Trustees member. A disciplinary committee has also been established to thoroughly investigate the allegations against Chief Omemu, ensuring due process as stipulated by the party’s constitution.

The meeting was chaired by Chief Dan Orbih and attended by a diverse group of influential party stakeholders, including opposition leaders, senators, members of the House of Representatives, and various state-level officials. This broad participation underscores the party’s unified effort to address the current challenges comprehensively and to position itself strategically for future political engagements.
