Tinubu Fails to Return from France, Makes a Detour to UK
Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s president, was scheduled to return from France on Saturday, but he made an unexpected detour.
According to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Tinubu went to London in the United Kingdom for a short private visit.
Tinubu had gone to Paris to attend a global financing summit themed Paris Agenda for People and the Planet between Wednesday and Friday.
“President Tinubu, who was initially scheduled to be back in Abuja on Saturday, will now proceed to London, United Kingdom, for a short private visit,” NTA stated on Saturday.
“The President will be back in the country in time for the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir festival.
“Tinubu had said that he was using the summit as an opportunity to hold short bilateral engagements with other heads of state. He also met heads of international financial institutions.
“I had fruitful engagements with Professor Benedict Oramah, the President of AFREXIM Bank; Odile Renaud-Basso, the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and development; and Sri Prakash Lohia, the Chairman of Indorama, the world’s largest independent polymer producer,” Tinubu had tweeted on Friday
The Paris Agenda for People and the Planet was a summit convened to figure out a new global financing pact.
All attendees agreed that no country should have to choose between fighting poverty and fighting for the planet.
Amongst other major agreements, the summit determined that countries should pursue diverse transition paths as needed while coming together to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. Countries will accelerate just energy transition partnerships and country packages for forest, climate and nature.
Emmanuel Macron, France’s president and chief host of the summit, announced a $100 billion fund to aid the new global financing pact and asked for more financial stimulus with more resources to support vulnerable economies.
