“Tinubu Scraps Fuel Subsidy: A Bold Move to Secure Nigeria’s Economic Future”

ABUJA – President Bola Tinubu announced on Monday that he removed the fuel subsidy to safeguard the future of unborn generations.
He made this statement during the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and emphasized that government policies are designed to ensure a prosperous future.
He said, “I’ve listened to you carefully. Today is not for long speeches, but I want to reassure you that you are the hope of this country. Everything depends on your future, and every decision I’ve made is about tomorrow.
“When you remove the oil subsidy, you’re protecting the future of the youth and generations yet unborn. Where will the investment for infrastructure come from? Many professionals voice concerns about “Japa,” the trend of leaving Nigeria. If we create prosperity and empower people here, they won’t leave; they will stay and help develop their homes.
“This government is all about you, and I hope you take it seriously. You can criticize politicians, but remember that politics is about development and future generations. I’m glad you’re here as a committee to inspire today, tomorrow, and beyond. I’m with you.”
President Tinubu acknowledged that when his administration began, the situation looked challenging. However, he stated that he had managed to weather the storm.
“When we started, things seemed foggy, uncertain, and hopeless. We faced significant challenges, but now the economy is turning a corner; prices are falling, confidence is returning, and investors are showing interest. The opportunity is yours.”
He addressed the committee, stating, “You have a great opportunity to advance the development of this country. The future is in your hands. My role is to help navigate and clear the path for you, allowing you to have a promising future.”
He invited feedback, saying, “Look me in the eye and share whatever you think is wrong and how you suggest we can do things better. As long as it is for our country’s prosperity, we will try our best to implement your ideas.”
“I assure you that we will do everything possible to make Nigeria a better place for you. But we can’t do it alone. You represent over 60% of our population; you are the heartbeat of our nation. I hope you take this opportunity to make an impact very seriously,” he added.
President Tinubu concluded by inaugurating the committee and wishing them success during their tenure. “Let’s employ technology wherever possible; let’s assess our farming conditions and seek ways to empower the youth. We need to work toward food sovereignty in this country.”
During the event, Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande highlighted that the conference aims to enhance youth engagement. He noted that President Tinubu’s administration is committed to listening and incorporating the ideas of young people into governance.
Olawande explained that committee members were carefully selected and included representatives from various sectors, including the Federal Ministry of Finance, civil society organizations, and the World Bank. Their goal is to champion and plan for a conference that will significantly impact the lives of Nigerian youth.
He urged Nigerian youths to leverage the youth conference to contribute to developmental policies.
Samson Itodo, a lead member of the youth confab planning committee and Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, commended President Tinubu for recognizing the role of youths. He outlined that the 30-day National Youth Confab will include virtual consultations and regional meetings and conclude with an engagement event in Abuja.
Itodo also called for the government to ensure that the conference remains insulated from political interference.
It is worth noting that during his 2024 Independence Day broadcast, President Tinubu announced plans for a 30-day national youth conference to address critical issues facing the nation’s youth, such as unemployment, education, and political participation. The committee will be chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development. Among those inaugurated are Senate Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission Asuquo Ekpeyong, Linus Okorie, Dr. Garba Aliyu, Babatunde Adeleke, Francis Sani, Azeezat Yishawu, and Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, among others.
