Tinubu’s Administration Reiterates Warning to NLC: Nationwide Protests Deemed Illegal

In a renewed admonition, Tinubu’s administration has reiterated its warning to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against proceeding with its planned two-day nationwide protests aimed at addressing the surging cost of living in the country.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, reiterated the government’s stance, citing concerns about potential hijacking of the protests, which could exacerbate the already precarious situation.

Despite the government’s cautionary stance, NLC President Joe Ajaero remains steadfast in his assertion that the protests will proceed as scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The genesis of the planned protests traces back to the alleged failure of the government to implement agreements reached between both parties on October 2, 2023, subsequent to the removal of the fuel subsidy. The NLC had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address the widespread hardship.

Onanuga, speaking in an interview with TrackNews Media, underscored the protests’ illegality, labeling them as a “breach of the law” and an “illegal undertaking.” He referenced correspondence from the Attorney General to the NLC’s lawyer, affirming the protests’ illegality and cautioning against violating a court order.

While disavowing any plans to disrupt the protests, Onanuga emphasized the government’s position, urging the NLC to heed the court order and refrain from pursuing the illegal protests.
