Tribunal set to deliver judgement on Kano’s iconic governorship election dispute

The Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal is set to deliver judgment today, September 20, 2023, in the petition filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) against the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
TrackNews Media reports that the three-man panel, presided over by Justice Oluyemi Akintan-Osadebay, will decide the fate of Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf of the NNPP.
In the March 2023 election, Yusuf polled 1,019,602 votes to defeat Nasiru Gawuna of the APC, who scored 890,705 votes.
The APC is challenging Yusuf’s victory on the grounds that he was not a full and registered member of the NNPP before the election. The party is also asking the tribunal to declare the election inconclusive or to nullify Yusuf’s victory and declare Gawuna the winner.
The NNPP has denied all the allegations and has asked the tribunal to dismiss the APC’s petition for lack of merit.
