Adeleye Kunle Reports
Nigeria’s Falconets kept their unbeaten record at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup alive with a 3-1 victory over Canada in their final group game on Thursday morning, TrackNews reports
Following the victory, the West Africans finished first in Group C with nine points from three games.
The Falconets conceded for the first time in the competition after keeping a clean sheet in their first two games.
Kaila Novak gave the Canadians the lead after four minutes.
Following that, Nigeria took control of the game, with Esther Onyenezide scoring from the penalty spot in the 24th minute after a Canadian player blocked a goal-bound shot with her hand.
Following a foul on Mercy Idoko, Onyenezide doubled the Falconets’ lead from the penalty spot eight minutes later.
The midfielder has now scored three goals in three competition appearances for Nigeria.
With a close range shot deep into first-half stoppage time, Idoko made the score 3-1 in favor of the Falconets.
France defeated Korea Republic 1-0 in the other group game to finish second behind Nigeria.
On Sunday, the Falconets will face the Group D runners-up, the Netherlands, in the quarter-finals.
