Rafael van der Vaart, a former Real Madrid player, has slammed Barcelona for their treatment of Frenkie de Jong, TrackNews reports.

De Jong’s future at Barcelona is currently uncertain, with the club reportedly writing to him last month to inform him that they want to cancel his contract and revert to the one he signed in 2019.

Barcelona claimed that De Jong’s current contract, which was granted to him by the club’s previous board, involved ‘criminality.’

However, Van der Vaart is dissatisfied with the way his countryman has been treated by Barcelona, comparing the Catalan club’s behavior to that of a “mafia,” adding that the Catalan club should be “punished” for their actions.

“You [Barcelona] can’t treat people like this,” van der Vaart said in an interview with TrackNews.

“Does Frenkie make too much money?” It is not as simple as signing a contract and then fulfilling it or leaving on good terms. This is a mafia, and they must be dealt with.
