The Sokoto State Election Petition Tribunal has affirmed the election of Aminu Tambuwal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the duly elected Senator for Sokoto South Senatorial District.

Abdullahi Danbaba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had filed a petition contesting Tambuwal’s victory, seeking a declaration from the Tribunal that the election was inconclusive due to substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

Danbaba also requested the Tribunal to order a re-election in 28 polling units where he alleged that the election did not take place during both the February and April substantive and supplementary polls.

In a unanimous decision, the Tribunal dismissed the petition, citing a lack of merit and unreliable documents and evidence presented.

Furthermore, the Tribunal imposed a cost of N200,000 each on the first and second respondents, the PDP and Tambuwal.

Tambuwal, a two-term former governor of Sokoto State, secured victory with a total of 100,860 votes, defeating his closest rival, Danbaba, who garnered 95,884 votes, with a margin of 4,976 votes.
