Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum yesterday, in Damboa in the state’s southern region, provided relief to flood victims and other vulnerable groups.
The governor, who oversaw the distribution, distributed N172 million in cash and food items to 30,436 residents, including flood victims.
Malam Isa Gusau, Special Adviser to Governor Zulum on Media, said in a statement made available to reporters in Maiduguri that 436 people had been identified as flood victims who had lost their homes and food items.
Prof. Adamu Garba Alloma, Chairman of Damboa Local Government Area, was quoted as informing the governor that “many houses were destroyed by the flood, causing some families to be displaced.”
Zulum ordered that N50,000 be given to each of the 436 victims, as well as a bag of maize grill, clothing materials, and a mat.
He sympathized with the victims while urging residents to refrain from building houses along waterways to avoid future disasters.
In addition to the 436 flood victims, Zulum oversaw the distribution of N5,000 and fabrics to 30,000 residents, the majority of whom are widows, vulnerable women and men from various communities.
Since arriving in Damboa on Sunday afternoon, the governor has visited communities in Hausari, Old Damboa Market, and Kachallaburari before spending the night in the town.
He claimed that the tractors would speed up the residents’ farming activities.
Zulum visited an integrated mega-Islamic school that is being built to combine Islamic and Western education.
