Despite repeated appeals from the national leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, appears set to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), with sources insisting that the decision is now irreversible and could be formalised at any moment.

Multiple aides close to the governor confirmed on Monday that Yusuf has concluded plans to leave the NNPP, even though the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had urged him to reconsider the move. According to the sources, the governor believes his political future and the stability of governance in Kano would be better secured within the ruling party.

One senior aide told Daily Trust that while the governor has not publicly announced his decision, preparations are already at an advanced stage, and consultations are ongoing with key stakeholders at both state and national levels.

Political discussions around the planned defection have dominated Kano’s political space since last week. Earlier reports suggested that January was being considered for the formal announcement. However, sources said on Tuesday that the ceremony may be postponed as the governor continues to consult widely to ensure the move does not disrupt governance or trigger instability in the state.

A report also claimed that arrangements had initially been made for APC national leaders to travel to Kano for the governor’s formal reception into the party. Those plans were reportedly put on hold after advice from senior party figures who cautioned against rushing the process.

It was further gathered that Yusuf has been advised to first meet key APC leaders in the state, including former governors and influential party stakeholders, as well as immediate past APC national chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. The aim, sources said, is to reconcile interests, manage internal party dynamics, and seek their support before making the defection public.

Beyond Kano, analysts believe the governor’s defection carries wider political implications. Kano is one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states, and Yusuf’s move could reshape alliances ahead of future elections. His defection may also weaken the NNPP nationally, given Kano’s role as the party’s strongest base during the last general election.

Observers say the development signals a broader realignment within Nigeria’s opposition space, as politicians reposition themselves in response to changing political realities at the centre.

The governor has yet to make an official statement on the matter, but insiders insist that the decision has already been taken, with only timing and strategy left to be finalised.
