The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State has concluded its ward, local government and state elective congresses peacefully, drawing commendation from stakeholders. Dr. Igbeta Ayebakuro, a public affairs commentator and former Legal Adviser of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), praised the conduct of the exercises in a statement issued on March 3, 2026.

Ayebakuro described the congresses as orderly, united and inclusive across the state. He said the peaceful process reflected the leadership style of Governor Douye Diri, whom he identified as the leader of the party in Bayelsa State.

According to Ayebakuro, the ward, local government area and state congresses were conducted without major disputes. He noted that although there were minor disagreements in some areas, the overall process was widely regarded as free, fair, credible and peaceful.

He attributed the outcome to what he described as Governor Diri’s commitment to peace building and inclusive governance. Ayebakuro stated that the governor has consistently prioritized unity and consensus in political and administrative matters since assuming office at Creek Haven.

He said the governor’s approach to leadership has ensured that various interests and stakeholders are given due consideration. This, he added, has helped to foster unity of purpose within the party and across the state.

Ayebakuro described the congresses as a significant phase in the development of the APC in Bayelsa. He said the process marked a departure from what he characterized as the traditional practice where governors handpick party officials in preparation for succession plans.

Instead, he said, the governor allowed internal democracy to guide the emergence of leaders at all levels. According to him, stakeholders in each ward, local government area and the state working committee were given the opportunity to participate actively in the process.

He emphasized that critical stakeholders were not only included but also assigned responsibilities. He added that the governor did not interfere in the selection or election processes, allowing party structures to function independently.

Ayebakuro further stated that the congresses helped to address previous divisions within the party. He said the often-cited “Old APC” and “New APC” divide was effectively set aside during the exercise.

According to him, members acted collectively in pursuit of a shared agenda. He noted that the peaceful collaboration among different factions demonstrated a new level of unity within the party.

He also used the opportunity to commend the governor’s broader record in governance. Ayebakuro said many Bayelsans believe the state has experienced significant progress under Diri’s leadership.

He cited developments in economic growth, infrastructure and capacity building as areas where the administration has made impact. He also mentioned improvements in youth and women development initiatives, power supply, healthcare and education.

Ayebakuro stated that the governor’s leadership style extends beyond politics into general public administration. He described Diri as a leader whose personal disposition has influenced governance outcomes in the state.

He maintained that the inclusive approach adopted during the congresses demonstrates political maturity. He added that it sets a precedent for internal party democracy in Bayelsa State.

The APC congresses were conducted across all wards and local government areas before culminating at the state level. Party officials and members participated in electing representatives to various leadership positions.

While minor concerns were reported in some quarters, observers and participants largely described the process as peaceful. No major incidents of violence or disruption were reported during the exercises.

Ayebakuro concluded by urging party members to sustain the unity demonstrated during the congresses. He said maintaining cohesion would strengthen the party’s structure and position it for future political engagements in the state.

The statement adds to growing reactions following the completion of the APC congresses in Bayelsa. Party leaders are expected to consolidate on the outcomes as the new executives assume their responsibilities.
