Hon. (Amb.) Akpofini Charles Odogu PhD has stated that the Toru-Orua community in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State has consistently aligned with ruling governments since Nigeria’s independence, describing the stance as a deliberate strategy aimed at securing development for its people. He made the remarks while addressing journalists during an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally held in Toru-Orua over the weekend.
Odogu said the community’s political history reflects a continuous decision to support the government in power rather than operate from the opposition. According to him, this approach has been maintained over decades as a way to ensure that Toru-Orua remains connected to decision-making structures and benefits from government-led initiatives.
He emphasized that the position is neither accidental nor driven by short-term political calculations. Instead, he described it as a consistent and intentional policy adopted by community leaders to prioritize growth and inclusion. He noted that aligning with the government of the day provides access to opportunities, infrastructure, and policies that directly impact local development.
Speaking at the rally, Odogu reaffirmed Toru-Orua’s current political stance, declaring the community’s support for the APC-led administration at the federal level under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He also expressed support for the leadership in Bayelsa State under Governor Douye Diri, describing both as key to advancing the interests of the people.
The rally drew party members, supporters, and community stakeholders, serving as a platform to restate political loyalties and mobilize grassroots backing. Attendees were told that maintaining alignment with ruling authorities has historically positioned Toru-Orua to benefit from government attention and resources.
Odogu explained that the community’s approach should not be misunderstood as passive political behavior. He said it is an active and strategic engagement with governance structures designed to ensure that Toru-Orua is not sidelined in policy implementation or development planning.
He added that remaining connected to power allows the community to advocate effectively for its needs, including infrastructure, economic opportunities, and social services. According to him, this alignment has helped sustain relevance in broader political conversations at both state and national levels.
The APC rally also highlighted broader efforts by party leaders to strengthen support in Bayelsa State, where political dynamics often involve shifting alliances and competition among major parties. Odogu’s remarks underscored the importance of unity and consistency in political positioning as a means of achieving tangible benefits for constituents.
Observers at the event noted that the statement reflects a pragmatic approach to politics often seen in local communities seeking development through cooperation with those in authority. The emphasis on continuity and alignment suggests a long-term perspective aimed at ensuring that Toru-Orua remains integrated into governance processes.
Odogu concluded by reiterating that the community’s guiding principle is progress. He said Toru-Orua’s identity is closely tied to its commitment to supporting governments that can deliver development outcomes, adding that the stance will remain unchanged.
He described the community as forward-looking and focused on securing a better future through strategic political engagement. According to him, Toru-Orua’s consistent alignment with ruling administrations is rooted in a desire to improve the welfare of its people and maintain a strong presence in the political landscape.
