The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has ratified the election of George Turnah, Esq. (MON), as the Chairman of the party in Bayelsa State. The decision was taken during the party’s 107th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
The ratification followed a motion moved by the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abbah Moro, and seconded by Hon. Kelechi Nwogu, a member of the House of Representatives. The motion received the backing of NEC members, leading to Turnah’s formal recognition as the state chairman.
The development marks a significant step in consolidating the party’s leadership structure in Bayelsa, a state widely regarded as one of the PDP’s strongholds. Party stakeholders view the ratification as a move aimed at strengthening internal cohesion and ensuring stability within the state chapter.
Turnah’s emergence comes at a time when the PDP is working to reposition itself ahead of future political contests. His leadership is expected to play a key role in mobilising grassroots support and coordinating party activities across the state.
Party insiders say the NEC’s decision reflects confidence in Turnah’s capacity to manage party affairs and foster unity among members. His recognition at the national level is also seen as a boost to his legitimacy and authority within the Bayelsa PDP structure.
The involvement of top-ranking lawmakers such as Senator Moro and Hon. Nwogu in moving and seconding the motion underscores the level of support Turnah enjoys within the party’s national leadership. It also signals an effort by the PDP to maintain alignment between its national and state organs.
Observers note that Bayelsa remains politically strategic for the PDP, given its historical voting pattern and influence in the Niger Delta region. Strengthening the party’s leadership in the state is therefore considered crucial to its broader regional and national ambitions.
The NEC meeting, which serves as one of the highest decision-making bodies of the party, addressed various organisational and political matters. However, the ratification of the Bayelsa State chairman stood out as a key resolution from the session.
With his position now formally endorsed, Turnah is expected to focus on unifying party members, addressing internal disputes, and preparing the PDP in Bayelsa for upcoming electoral engagements.
The party leadership has not indicated any immediate changes to the state executive structure, suggesting continuity in its operational framework as it builds momentum ahead of future political activities.
