The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed an attack on an Islamic Scholar, Malam Musa Lukawa, immediately after the Jumu’at prayers at Lukuwa Mosque in Sokoto.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, says, a distress call was received from a concerned Citizen reporting a violent incident at the Mosque.
Preliminary investigations indicate that an unidentified Man allegedly entered the Mosque and attacked Malam Musa Lukuwa shortly after the prayers.
The assailant reportedly used a knife to inflict deep cuts on the victim’s neck and left hand.
The Police added that the suspect was overpowered by members of the congregation and subsequently killed by an angry mob before intervention of Security operatives
The assailant was later taken to a Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a Medical Doctor.
The Victim Musa Lukuwa was also rushed to a Specialist Hospital, where he received medical attention and was subsequently discharged.
The Command condemned the killing of the suspect, describing it as jungle justice, while urging members of the Public to remain calm and refrain from any form of unrest or reprisal attack.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, called on Residents to cooperate with Security Agencies as investigations continue, stressing the need to allow the law to take its course.
It states that he Security Personnel have been deployed to the affected Area to maintain law and order.
The Command also urged members of the Public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest Security Agency.
