Former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has called on associates of President Bola Tinubu to refrain from interfering in the operations of Nigeria’s judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His remarks come amid growing concerns about political influence on key democratic institutions in the country.
Amaechi stressed that safeguarding the independence of these institutions is essential for maintaining public trust in Nigeria’s democratic system. He warned that any form of interference could undermine the rule of law and weaken the credibility of elections and judicial processes.
Speaking publicly on the issue, Amaechi expressed concern that political actors close to the presidency may be exerting undue influence on bodies that are expected to operate impartially. He noted that both the judiciary and INEC play critical roles in ensuring fairness, justice, and accountability, particularly during and after elections.
He argued that Nigeria’s democracy depends heavily on the ability of these institutions to function without pressure or manipulation. According to him, attempts to control or sway their decisions could lead to a loss of confidence among citizens and further deepen political tensions.
Amaechi emphasized that the judiciary must remain a neutral arbiter in disputes, especially those arising from electoral contests. He added that when court decisions are perceived as biased or influenced, it can create instability and erode faith in governance.
Similarly, he highlighted the importance of INEC’s independence in conducting free, fair, and credible elections. He cautioned that any perception of interference in the commission’s activities could delegitimize election outcomes and discourage voter participation.
The former governor also reflected on Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that the country has made progress but still faces challenges in strengthening its institutions. He suggested that political leaders and their allies should prioritize national interest over personal or partisan gains.
Amaechi’s comments come at a time when debates over electoral integrity and judicial independence continue to dominate public discourse.
