Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has fined plaintiff Johnmary Jideobi N1 million over a suit seeking to stop former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
The judge criticised the conduct of the plaintiff and his lawyer, Ndubuisi Ukpai, over repeated absence in court and delays in moving the case forward. He described their actions as unacceptable and awarded the cost in favour of Jonathan.
The court noted that although the suit was filed on October 6, 2025, the plaintiff had not served the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), who are listed as defendants in the case.
Jonathan’s lawyer, Chris Uche (SAN), told the court that the former president only became aware of the suit through media reports before responding legally.
During Friday’s proceedings, only lawyers representing Jonathan and the AGF were initially present in court. Uche urged the judge to dismiss the case, accusing the plaintiff of showing disrespect to the court and wasting judicial time.
Counsel to the AGF, J.D. Esho, also stated that her office had not been served with the originating summons, while INEC was equally yet to receive the court documents.
Ukpai later appeared in court and apologised for his absence, explaining that his vehicle broke down on the way to court.
Justice Lifu subsequently adjourned the matter until May 18 for hearing of pending applications and the substantive suit.
