The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, is expected to formally announce his resignation at a world press conference scheduled for Thursday afternoon, following weeks of speculation and official denials.
Gusau’s reported decision comes amid growing pressure on the leadership of the football governing body over Nigeria’s recent football fortunes and a series of developments involving security and anti-corruption agencies.
The NFF leadership has faced increasing criticism from football stakeholders and Nigerians over the performance of the national teams, including the Super Eagles and Super Falcons, as concerns continue to mount over Nigeria’s failure to secure qualification for their respective World Cup competitions.
The federation had earlier scheduled its next executive elections for September 2026, with Gusau’s re-election campaign reportedly still active despite the mounting pressure on his administration.
The situation, however, intensified following reported interventions by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) at various times.
There were also reports that as many as eight members of the NFF Executive Committee had resigned or were under pressure to step down, in an apparent move aimed at compelling the NFF president to reconsider his position.
Despite the reports, Gusau had continued with activities associated with his bid for another term in office, fueling uncertainty over whether he would remain in the race for the September elections.
However, fresh reports indicate that the uncertainty could be brought to an end at the scheduled press conference.
Gusau is expected to address journalists at noon at the NFF headquarters, Sunday Dankaro Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
According to reports, the NFF president is expected to use the occasion to clarify several issues that have dominated Nigerian football in recent weeks, particularly the 2026 NFF elections, the future of the current Executive Committee and the mounting pressure on the federation’s leadership.
His expected announcement will likely trigger fresh discussions about the direction of Nigerian football and the process of selecting a new leadership for the federation ahead of the proposed September elections.
