YENAGOA — The National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Comrade Isaiah Kemje Benjamin, has commended the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, for prioritising sports development and investing in sporting infrastructure across the state.
Benjamin made the commendation during an inspection tour of major ongoing and renovated sports facilities in Bayelsa State.
The SWAN president visited the 5,000-capacity stadium at Sampou, the 30,000-capacity stadium at Ogbogene, the renovated Government Field, Onopa, and the wrestling gymnasium at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex.
Speaking during the inspection, Benjamin congratulated Governor Diri and the people of Bayelsa State on the 30th anniversary of the creation of the state, describing the ongoing investments in sports infrastructure as significant to the future development of sports in the state.
He expressed satisfaction with the level of sports development under the Diri-led Prosperity Administration, particularly the construction of the two major stadium projects.
According to him, the completion of the 30,000-capacity stadium would significantly enhance Bayelsa’s capacity to host major national and international sporting events.
He also noted that the facility could provide an opportunity for top-flight Nigerian Premier Football League matches to be hosted in Bayelsa, potentially contributing to economic activities and opportunities for youths and businesses.
Benjamin urged Bayelsans, particularly young people, to take ownership of the facilities and protect them from vandalism and other forms of abuse.
He said the projects were investments in the future of Bayelsa and generations yet unborn, stressing the need for collective responsibility in preserving the facilities.
Igali Assures of Timely Completion
The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Baraladei Igali, commended the construction company handling the stadium project and assured residents that the government remained committed to its timely completion.
Igali expressed hope that the facilities would be ready for use during the 2028 National Sports Festival, which Bayelsa State is scheduled to host.
He also appreciated Governor Diri for providing the necessary funding and support for the development of sports infrastructure across the state.
Contractor Assures Bayelsans
The Business Manager of Mutual Construction Company, Dr. Dagogo Emmanuel, also assured Bayelsans of the company’s commitment to completing the project within the agreed timeframe.
Emmanuel appreciated stakeholders, youths and members of the host communities for their cooperation and support since the commencement of the project.
He said the company would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of the stadium.
The inspection further highlighted the Bayelsa State Government’s ongoing efforts to expand sports infrastructure and create facilities capable of supporting athletes, sporting events and youth development across the state.
