Commission promises corrective action, says final register will be certified on December 15
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched a full-scale investigation into suspected AI-generated photographs found in the preliminary register of voters, pledging to address any verified irregularities.
The commission disclosed this in a statement issued by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), following public concerns over questionable photographs appearing in the register published on its website.
INEC explained that the online register, released on October 26, 2026, was the same preliminary register displayed physically at Registration Areas nationwide from October 9 to 15 as part of the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.
According to the commission, some questionable registration records were identified during the physical display and flagged for further examination. It said the review process and corrective measures had commenced in line with established procedures.
INEC clarified that the online publication represented the original preliminary register and did not incorporate all ongoing data-cleanup activities.
The commission stressed that the preliminary register was not the final certified voters’ register, explaining that the display exercise was designed to allow citizens and stakeholders to identify errors, challenge questionable entries and seek necessary corrections.
It added that investigators were examining the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses.
INEC assured Nigerians that appropriate action would be taken based on verified findings and that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
The electoral body also commended citizens and stakeholders who raised concerns, noting that public scrutiny was essential to improving the accuracy and credibility of the voters’ register.
INEC said it remained committed to completing the necessary verification, adjudication and data-cleanup processes ahead of the scheduled certification of the final Register of Voters on December 15, 2026.
