Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to national unity as the country looks ahead to the 2027 general elections. He urged citizens to embrace sacrifice and uphold democratic values, describing the period as crucial to Nigeria’s stability and future development.
In a public address, Yahaya stressed that national cohesion remains essential for progress. He said Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and encouraged people across different regions, ethnic groups, and political affiliations to work together in pursuit of peace and sustainable growth.
The governor acknowledged the economic and social challenges currently facing the country. He noted that while many Nigerians are experiencing hardship, overcoming these difficulties will require patience, resilience, and a shared sense of responsibility among citizens.
According to him, meaningful progress cannot be achieved without a willingness to make sacrifices for the greater good. He emphasized that short-term struggles should not overshadow the long-term vision of a stable and prosperous nation.
Yahaya also highlighted the importance of protecting democratic institutions as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the elections. He called on political leaders, electoral bodies, and voters to respect the rule of law and ensure that the democratic process remains credible and transparent.
He warned against the dangers of divisive rhetoric, urging politicians to focus on issue-based campaigns rather than statements that could inflame tensions. Promoting dialogue and constructive engagement, he said, would help build trust and strengthen the democratic system.
The governor expressed concern about actions or comments that could incite violence, noting that such behavior poses a threat to national unity. He reiterated that peace must be maintained before, during, and after the elections to safeguard lives, property, and the country’s democratic progress.
Yahaya placed particular emphasis on the role of young people in shaping Nigeria’s future. He encouraged youths to participate actively in the democratic process, stressing that their involvement is critical to building a more inclusive and representative political system.
He called on young Nigerians to engage responsibly, avoid being used for disruptive activities, and contribute positively to national development.
According to him, empowering youths through civic participation will strengthen democracy and promote accountability.
The governor also appealed to security agencies to remain professional and impartial in carrying out their duties. He said their role in maintaining law and order would be vital in ensuring peaceful elections and boosting public confidence in the process.
Similarly, he urged electoral authorities to uphold integrity and transparency, noting that credible elections are fundamental to sustaining democracy. He stressed that all stakeholders must play their part in preserving the legitimacy of the electoral system.
Yahaya concluded by expressing optimism about Nigeria’s future, despite existing challenges. He stated that with unity, discipline, and a collective commitment to democratic ideals, the country can overcome its difficulties and achieve lasting development.
His remarks reflect a broader call among political leaders for calm, cooperation, and responsible conduct as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections. With political activities expected to increase in the coming months, such messages are seen as important in promoting stability and preventing conflict.
