Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has dismissed speculation about a possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reaffirming his loyalty and commitment to the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. He made the declaration on Monday while addressing party stakeholders from all 33 Local Government Areas of the state in Ibadan.

Makinde’s statement comes shortly after he participates in a political meeting in Kano hosted by the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso. The gathering was also attended by notable political figures, including former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, which had fueled speculation about potential political realignments.

Addressing party members, the governor insisted that the PDP remains strong and will actively contest the 2027 elections at all levels. He rejected claims that the party is weakening, stating that it will field candidates for positions ranging from state offices to national roles.

Makinde expressed confidence in the PDP’s chances, assuring supporters that the party would not only remain relevant but also secure electoral victories. He emphasized that he and his supporters would remain within the party and work toward its success.

He urged party leaders and stakeholders to prioritize unity and resolve internal disagreements, noting that cohesion is essential for electoral success. According to him, efforts must be made to accommodate differing interests within the party structure.

The governor acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating that opposition forces are determined to gain control of Oyo State. He, however, maintained that it is the responsibility of PDP members to strengthen internal collaboration and prevent divisions that could weaken their chances.

Makinde also directed party leaders across the state’s zones to organize meetings aimed at fostering dialogue and building consensus among members. He said such engagements are necessary to ensure a united front ahead of the elections.

As part of preparations for the 2027 polls, the governor announced automatic tickets for certain categories of lawmakers. He stated that members of the National Assembly and first-term members of the Oyo State House of Assembly would be granted automatic tickets to seek re-election.

He explained that decisions regarding returning lawmakers would take into account existing political arrangements, including rotational agreements. In cases where some individuals choose not to seek another term, the party would adjust its plans accordingly.

Makinde noted that some second-term lawmakers may pursue additional terms, indicating that such ambitions would be considered within the broader framework of party agreements and electoral strategy.

Describing the upcoming elections as critical, the governor framed them as a defining moment for Nigeria’s democratic future. He stressed that the stakes go beyond immediate political gains and extend to shaping governance for future generations.

He encouraged party members to remain determined, noting that political success often requires persistence and collective effort. He expressed confidence that the PDP can overcome its challenges and emerge victorious.

At the stakeholders’ meeting held at the State Secretariat, Makinde reiterated that all aspirants seeking elective offices in 2027 would contest under the PDP platform. He added that the party is considering adopting a consensus-based approach in selecting candidates.

According to him, unity, discipline, and internal cohesion will be key factors in maintaining the PDP’s dominance in Oyo State as preparations intensify for the next general elections.
