Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has donated ₦20 million to the families of 37 suspected artisanal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State.
The victims were among several people arrested during security operations around the Lt. Gen. Mohammed Inuwa Wushishi Estate in Minna on September 15 and 16.
The deaths have triggered public concern, prompting the Federal Government to suspend the Niger State NSCDC commandant and order an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
During his visit to Minna on Tuesday, Atiku met with some of the affected families and survivors before making the donation.
He also paid condolence visits to the Emir of Minna, Umar Bahago, and former military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described the incident as a painful reminder of the difficulties confronting many young Nigerians.
Atiku said he was particularly concerned by the account of a survivor, who allegedly described severe conditions inside the detention facility.
The former vice-president called for truth, justice and accountability, while arguing that the investigation should also examine the broader economic circumstances that push young Nigerians into dangerous and precarious livelihoods.
According to him, the government should assess how economic policies and rising living costs are affecting families and young people.
Atiku maintained that economic reforms should ultimately be assessed by their impact on ordinary Nigerians, particularly families, workers and young people.
The ADC candidate also urged the Federal Government to address the conditions that may compel citizens to take greater risks simply to earn a living.
