The Nigerian Navy has raided a suspected militant camp in Fununu Community, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, arresting three suspected associates of a wanted militant kingpin.
The operation, carried out on August 6, 2026, by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso, was part of ongoing efforts by the Navy to dismantle criminal networks and improve security across the Niger Delta’s waterways and riverine communities.
The Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, disclosed the development in a statement on the operation.
According to him, the three suspects were allegedly linked to a wanted militant kingpin identified as Sunday Godlaw, who is accused of involvement in criminal activities, including sea robbery, piracy and illegal black sand mining within the area.
He said a search of the suspected camp led to the recovery of a pump-action rifle loaded with two live cartridges, three AK-47 magazines, four walkie-talkies, a ballistic vest and two camouflage uniforms.
Other items recovered from the location included mobile phones, a power bank, machetes and a motorcycle.
Folorunsho said no casualty was recorded during the operation, adding that the suspected kingpin and some members of his group managed to escape before the security personnel could apprehend them.
The three arrested suspects and the recovered items were subsequently handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS), Bayelsa State Command, on August 7 for further investigation and necessary action.
The Navy said the operation formed part of its broader efforts to dismantle criminal and militant networks operating in the Niger Delta, deny them freedom of action and prevent riverine communities from being used as safe havens for unlawful activities.
The Navy also reaffirmed its commitment to working with other security agencies to protect lives and property, secure coastal communities and maintain a safe maritime environment across the Niger Delta.
