The Northern Christian Association (NCA) has called on the Federal Government to explain the disparity in budgetary allocations for church and mosque projects contained in the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
In a statement issued on Monday, the association’s Chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab, said available reports indicate that N1.91 billion was allocated for seven church-related projects, while approximately N6.14 billion was earmarked for 52 mosque-related projects, out of a total of about N8.05 billion budgeted for religious projects.
Hayab stressed that the association is not opposed to government funding for religious projects but insisted that such allocations must be guided by fairness, transparency and equity.
«”How long will Nigerians continue to read stories that expose the hypocrisy of our leaders? The partiality, lack of equity and unequal treatment of citizens by government and political leaders are among the major factors responsible for division, distrust, segregation and the absence of genuine unity,” he said.»
He noted that Christians have continued to exercise restraint in the interest of peace but warned that government should not mistake patience for weakness, adding that any perception of discrimination undermines public confidence and national cohesion.
According to him, the Nigerian Constitution guarantees equality for all citizens, while the teachings of all religions reject injustice and discrimination.
«”Our Constitution recognises every Nigerian as equal before the law, while the teachings of all religions discourage unfair treatment. Government should, therefore, not be seen to promote policies that suggest preferential treatment for one religious group over another,” Hayab added.»
The Northern Christian Association urged the Federal Government to review the allocations to ensure fairness, equity and equal treatment, saying such measures are essential to strengthening national unity and fostering trust among Nigerians.
