Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has claimed that Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi will not win the South-South region in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the statement during an interview with TVC News on Monday while discussing the political strategy adopted by the defunct G-5 Governors’ Group during the 2023 presidential election.
According to Wike, the G-5 deliberately worked to prevent the then Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, from securing dominance in the South-South.
He said the group considered the PDP particularly strong in the region and decided that votes should not consolidate behind Atiku.
Wike claimed that the strategy allowed Obi to gain support in some parts of the South-South, but that Rivers State was treated differently.
He said the group believed an Obi victory in Rivers would have political implications and therefore worked against it.
Reflecting on the 2027 election, Wike said the political circumstances had changed significantly since 2023.
The FCT Minister declared that, in his assessment, Obi would not win the South-South in 2027.
Wike’s comments come amid renewed political realignments and growing competition among major political blocs ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
