The South South Reawakening Group (SSRG) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release the funds appropriated for the South South Development Commission in the 2026 budget. The group made the appeal in Yenagoa, stressing the need for immediate action to support development efforts in the region.

According to SSRG, the timely disbursement of the allocated funds is essential for addressing longstanding infrastructure and socio-economic challenges in the South South zone. The group said the commission was established to drive development and tackle issues such as poverty, unemployment, and environmental concerns.

The group expressed concern that delays in releasing the funds could hinder the commission’s ability to carry out its mandate effectively. It noted that communities in the region are in urgent need of improved infrastructure, including roads, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions.

SSRG emphasized that the South South region, which contributes significantly to Nigeria’s economy through oil and gas production, deserves focused development attention. It argued that the commission represents a strategic mechanism for ensuring that resources are directed toward the needs of the people.

The group also highlighted environmental challenges, including pollution and degradation linked to oil exploration activities. It said adequate funding of the commission would enable targeted interventions to address these issues and improve living conditions for affected communities.

In its appeal, SSRG called on the federal government to demonstrate commitment to equitable development by ensuring that budgetary allocations are not only approved but also fully implemented. The group maintained that releasing the funds would signal seriousness in addressing regional disparities.

It further urged relevant government agencies to expedite administrative processes that may be causing delays. According to the group, bureaucratic bottlenecks should not prevent critical development initiatives from being executed.

The call comes amid broader discussions about regional development commissions across Nigeria and their effectiveness in delivering tangible results. Stakeholders have often stressed the importance of adequate funding, transparency, and accountability in ensuring these bodies fulfill their mandates.

SSRG also appealed for collaboration between federal and state governments, as well as local stakeholders, to maximize the impact of the commission’s activities. It said coordinated efforts would help ensure that projects are properly implemented and aligned with community needs.

While acknowledging economic constraints facing the country, the group insisted that development of the South South region should remain a priority. It argued that sustained investment in the area would contribute to national stability and economic growth.

The group concluded by urging the presidency to act swiftly in releasing the funds, noting that delays could further slow development and deepen existing challenges in the region.
