The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has opposed a renewed bail application filed by former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, intensifying the legal battle surrounding the high-profile case.

At the resumed hearing, counsel to the anti-graft agency urged the court to reject the application, arguing that granting bail to the former governor poses significant risks. The prosecution maintained that El-Rufai, given his political stature, wide network of influence, and access to substantial resources, could potentially evade trial, obstruct the course of justice, or interfere with key witnesses.

This position aligns with the court’s earlier ruling, which denied the defendant bail on similar grounds. In that decision, the court underscored the gravity of the charges against El-Rufai, noting that the weight of the allegations and the possibility of undue influence justified keeping him in custody pending further proceedings.

Legal observers say the ICPC’s firm stance reflects a broader effort to reinforce accountability in high-level corruption cases, particularly those involving politically exposed persons. The commission insists that preserving the integrity of the judicial process must take precedence over considerations for temporary release.

Meanwhile, the defence team has continued to push for bail, contending that the former governor is entitled to the presumption of innocence and would be willing to comply with any conditions imposed by the court.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with many closely watching how the judiciary navigates issues of due process, accountability, and the balance between individual rights and public interest.

The court is expected to rule on the fresh bail application in the coming days.
