Kidnappers holding schoolchildren abducted from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have reportedly made a series of demands, including the adoption of Sharia law in the state, as conditions for the release of their captives.

According to reports circulating on social media and local sources, the bandits are demanding:

₦1 billion ransom to be delivered in the Republic of Benin;

Two Toyota Hilux vehicles;

Food supplies, firearms, and ammunition;

The release of their members allegedly detained at Agodi and Abolongo correctional facilities; and

Amendments to Oyo State laws to enforce and adopt Sharia law.

The development has sparked widespread debate online, with “Sharia” emerging as a trending topic across social media platforms.

Despite the reported demands, the Oyo State Government has maintained its position that it will not negotiate with kidnappers. As of today, the abducted schoolchildren have reportedly spent three weeks in captivity.

The latest controversy comes against the backdrop of lingering tensions surrounding the debate over Sharia law in Oyo State.

In December 2024, some Islamic groups announced plans to inaugurate a Sharia Arbitration Panel, often referred to as a “Sharia Court,” in Oyo State on January 11, 2025. The move generated significant public debate and opposition from various stakeholders.

The state government under Governor Seyi Makinde opposed the initiative, while the revered traditional ruler, Ooni of Ife, also reportedly expressed reservations about the development.

Reacting to the controversy in January 2025, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar defended the right of Muslims to establish Sharia-based arbitration mechanisms, arguing that provisions relating to Sharia are recognized under Nigeria’s Constitution.

Security agencies have yet to officially verify the reported demands attributed to the kidnappers, and investigations into the abduction remain ongoing.

Meanwhile, families of the abducted children continue to await their safe return as concern grows over their welfare after weeks in captivity.
