The Bayelsa Health Commissioner, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe has raised severe public health concerns regarding the importation and the unhygienic processing of raw animal skins(cowhides) widely known as kpomo meat sourced from outside the State, warning citizens of significant health and safety risks.
Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe with his colleague, Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Ebi Ololo and Commissioner for Agriculture, Profm Sese Bekes, and other government officials who were on inspection yesterday uncovered alarming and unhygienic practices surrounding the imported cowhides(Ponmo meat) at the States’ abattoir yesterday.
The States’ Health Commissioner gave the warning as he revealed that the cowhides(kpomo meat) were being processed into edible forms using contaminated water and stored under conditions that showed visible signs of decomposition, unhygienity.
He emphasized that those practices are hazardous and pose serious threats to both public health and individual well-being and as such needs to halt with immediate effects.
Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe following the directives of the Governor, His Excellency Sen. Douye Diri, stated clearly that a multi-sectoral monitoring team has been activated to crackdown on the illegal and unhygienic practices and to ensure every unsafe products are removed from circulation for the wellbeing of all Bayelsans.
The Commissioner further shared key health recommendations & Public Directives which includes; Immediate Cessation, health screening, public vigilance, community action as he encouraged the public to adopt a “See Something, Say Something, Take Action” approach by reporting suspicious or unhygienic food processing activities to relevant authorities.
Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe reiterates government commitment to safeguarding public health and assured that the Ministry will continue working across agencies to enforce food safety standards strictly.
